In der Performance Music was My First Art schlüpft annette hollywood in die Rolle der Alleinunterhalterin. Das abendfüllende Programm stellt das Verhältnis und die Wechselwirkungen von Musik und Kunst im Leben und Werk der Künstlerin anhand ausgewählter Performances und Videoarbeiten vor, nicht ohne selbstironische Überspitzung. So wird z. B. ein Ausschnitt aus der sechsstündigen Performance The Praeludium by Bach (1997) wiederaufgeführt, bei der annette hollywood das einzige Klavierstück, das sie beherrscht, dilettantisch auf einem kleinen Spielzeuginstrument in allen 528 möglichen Klangkombinationen des Instruments spielt.
In der Performance Music was My First Art erhält das Publikum unter anderem beim Artist Name Rings-
Ratespiel oder bei zahlreichen Gesangseinlagen immer wieder Gelegenheit mitzumachen. Gerade durch den hier gefeierten Dilettantismus wird die Schwelle zwischen Publikum und Künstlerin aufgehoben. Es öffnet sich ein Raum für das gemeinsame leidenschaftliche und ungehemmte Ausleben von Musik mit dem Höhepunkt im finalen Art Karaoke Singen.

In the performance Music was My First Art annette hollywood takes on the role of a solo entertainer. The evening-filling program presents the relationship and the mutual impacts of music and art in the life and work of the artist using select performances and video works, but not without ironic exaggeration. For example, a passage from the six-hour performance The Praeludium by Bach (1997) is presented in which annette hollywood plays the only piece she knows dilettantishly on a small toy keyboard in all 528 possible sound combinations the instrument offers.
In the performance Music was My First Art, the audience is repeatedly given an opportunity to participate, as in the guessing game of Artist Name Rings or in numerous musical numbers. Precisely due to her dilettantism, the threshold between the audience and the artist is abolished. A space opens for joint passionate and uninhibited enjoying of music with the climax in the final Art Karaoke.
